PaTorrent

BitTorrent client · Windows, Linux, BSD · by DukeCorp1996

A lean, native torrent client in the spirit of µTorrent 2.2.1: tiny, fast, and comfortable with thousands of torrents.

PaTorrent (long name PatinaTorrent, because a patina is the good kind of rust) runs on its own Rust port of the libtorrent engine. The goal is single self-contained programs with minimal dependencies, low memory and CPU use, and an instant interface even with 100,000 torrents on a modest PC.

Pre-alpha, nearing 1.0. There are no release downloads yet, and settings may change between builds. Please don't use it for torrents you care about, or on private trackers: its client ID is not whitelisted anywhere yet.

Road to 1.0

Done: v2 and hybrid torrents download and seed, tested against qBittorrent and Deluge.

Done: an HTTPS Web UI, and remote mode so the Windows GUI can drive a daemon on another machine.

Done: 34 languages, including right-to-left layouts.

In progress: the GTK 4 interface for Linux and BSD. The main window works on the real engine.

In progress: the 100,000-torrent test. The engine restores that many in about 2 seconds; the interfaces and a low-end PC are next.

To do: release downloads: a Windows zip, AppImage, Flatpak and tarballs for Linux, and a macOS app.

To do: hands-on testing of every dialog, the final app icon, and release notes.

What works today

The engine downloads and seeds over TCP and uTP, with HTTP, HTTPS and UDP trackers, magnet links, DHT, peer exchange, local peer discovery, encryption, web seeds, proxies, UPnP / NAT-PMP, and IP filters.

patorrent: the Windows GUI, with the µTorrent 2.2.1 main window, Preferences, the Add and Create dialogs, RSS, and the scheduler.

patorrent-nox: a headless daemon with its own Web UI and a qBittorrent-compatible API, so existing tools can talk to it. Runs as a systemd, FreeBSD, or Windows service.

patorrent-gtk: the GTK 4 interface for Linux and BSD, in its first stage.

Build it yourself

Until release downloads are ready, PaTorrent can be built from source with Rust 1.85 or newer. On Windows you also need the Visual Studio 2022 C++ build tools; the repository has build.bat and run.bat for a double-click build.

cd PaTorrent
